The Symbols
Braille vs CyR.U.S.
We love Braille, the tactile writing system used by people with low-vision. It consists of tiny raised dots that a trained person can “read” using tactile feedback. But Braille requires a high degree of education to master. And Braille is space intensive and therefore technically challenging and costly to implement on packaging.
While Braille is a beautiful and amazing language, we ruled it out as a messaging system. As it turns out only around 10% of the visually-impaired population reads it, and Braille occupies a lot of space, which is at a premium on product packaging.
I get very heartwarming letters with stories like the one below as to how CyR.U.S. has impacted the beauty experience.
“Tonight, I independently and systematically went through all the products and found out the benefits and how to apply one by one and put everything on my face. As I applied the last product, the night cream generously as instructed on my face, floods of tears just came from nowhere. I realized I have never been able to do this before. Very often new products just sit in my drawer as I wait for sighted assistance to tell me how they work and then forget about them.
And we constantly stay in touch with the blind visually impaired community to test out new ideas and symbols to keep CyR.U.S. vibrant and relevant
